About Mandeigh

I am a Scottish based figurative painter working in oils, creating medium and large-scale works that explore the mythic dimensions of the human and animal form. My paintings are rooted in storytelling, archetype, and the sacred. Blending realism with symbolic detail to create visual narratives that act as portals between the seen and unseen.

 

At the heart of my practice is a desire to remember, not just personal memory, but collective, mythic memory. The kind that lives in the land, the body, the bones. My work draws from ancestral archetypes, the divine feminine and masculine, and the wild intelligence of animal messengers. I am especially drawn to horses, foxes, and wolves, each holding a recurring place in my compositions as symbols of instinct, sovereignty, and guidance.

 

While my work is clearly figurative, with recognisable human and animal forms, it is never simply representational. I am not painting portraits; I am painting presences. Each figure carries meaning, emotion, and resonance beyond the literal. I use gesture, expression, and symbolic elements (such as red thread, thresholds, or natural motifs) to weave deeper stories into the image. The viewer may not need to “understand” the painting to feel its atmosphere, the work is designed to speak to the inner landscape as much as the outer eye.

 

My current body of work, Portals Divine, is a series of oil paintings that explore polarity and wholeness through sacred imagery. Many of the works depict solitary figures in quiet states of connection, accompanied by animals or natural forces. The pieces are intimate, charged, and unafraid to hold stillness.

 

Each painting is approached as a threshold, something to stand before, not just look at.
